While nothing pisses me off more than being a victim of "that flash, " it does what it's supposed to do... slows us down and reduces accidents. Driving is legally a privilege, not a right. That which helps saves lives is right. My only grjp with photoradar has been on highway 51 in phoenix. And there only because the speed limit changes from 65 to 55 And back With little warning and Strategically placed radar to take advantage of The driver rather than help safety.

I believe all of the above have uses that outweigh the negative. I cannot believe how many bad drivers and risky drivers there is in Sioux City. Any thing that may help keep them in line is a good thing.

I agree w/paulydel's Message Posted: Mar 17, 2011 4:06:42 PM Ignore paulydel Report Abuse Its been proven that cameras at traffic lights that are high accident intersections cuts down the majority of accidents and serious accidents to just fender benders. The cameras shouldn't bother anybody if they are not breaking the law.
One night while driving alone, I chose to run a red light at a dark crime infested empty intersection in WashDC. I told myself my safety was more important than a $75 fine. I gladly paid it.

I think all the specific mentions there are fine but I can't go with an open "other use(s)" answer. That's too free spirited for me and could easily work into invasion of privacy or entrapment.
A big one that people are all in uproar about seems to be the traffic light cameras. I have serious issue that the idiots in our DOT or City, whoever made the decisions, had cameras installed, decided they were too expensive, had them yanked out after we paid for them, then had new ones installed a short time later. I don't like seeing my tax money squandered foolishly and especially when I am seeing it spent twice for the same thing.
The cameras themselves, I am for! Sure, everyone feels they should be able to cheat a light to get where they are running late for, but at what cost? Our lights are literally timed to allow people to run them and not let the opposing traffic go until they get 2 or 3 more cars through a light. I don't like to wait but to set it up so doing something wrong is accepted instead of changing the timing to allow more cars through is ludicrous. Check and see if this happens in your area. Watch the light turn red in a main intersection and see if there is a delay in the opposing traffic lane. A brief delay, fine, but ours have 5-10 second delays in some intersections.
I think the cameras keep a few more people honest, and if they don't, well, let those running the lights pay for a few more cameras.
Just my opinion. YMMV

I believe that the proper use for cameras are for police cruisers, toll booths, traffic control / monitoring. Using a camera for speed control and traffic lights can actually cause accidents to happen. They don't even assess you points to your license. It is just a money making box for the city.

On patrol vehicles, traffic control lights and toll booths. Radar has always been technically suspect, ( ask a radar technician for the explanation), and is often used in an uncalibrated or miscalibrated state to perpetuate speed traps.

We do not have toll booths up here but we do have traffic lights and police cars so I would choose those two for law enforcement.

Toll booths are legitimate provided that the pictures are used merely to collect the unpaid toll (vehicle may lack or have functioning transponder or driver inadequate cash) and not as a violation.
Cop cams are a good idea to keep traffic enforcement honest.
Traffic lights are a marginal use -- need to be set to allow for reaction time of 90% of motorists -- if they trigger too quickly, they become a revenue enhancement rather than a safety enforcement.
Speed control is a bad use of cameras -- officer discretion is essential to target serious violators and freeway safety is better served by keeping up with the flow of traffic even when that flow sometimes exceeds posted limits.

Anyone who says they are against photo radar is someone who constantly breaks the traffic laws. They say it is privacy invasive - only when you've run a red light or broken the speed limit. They say it's a money grab - again, only if the laws have been broken. If you want to do away with photo radar, stop breaking the law and they will no longer be necessary!

some cities have shortened the time set for street lights and installed camera's as a means to bring more money in when ppl are caught under the yellow which turns to a red quickly..

Cameras on police cars does not necessarily keep anyone honest. The law enforcement can easily choose if they want to use the footage or not, according to their best interests

I believe that in the opinion poll cameras should be used in police cars for toll roadways, highways, city streets, for blind people they should have a technology that makes a sound so the blind person can hear it,anything and all situations that help protect drivers and pedestrians from any situation deemed bad.....happy driving...Alvan>email>abur53@yahoo.com

While we're on the subject of cameras, I came across this interesting video the other day, a compilation of red light runners caught on video.
A warning… some of the incidents and crashes are pretty horrific. Not for the faint of heart.
My question to those that support red light cameras: how many of these accidents did the red light cameras *prevent*? We see the flash of the camera going off to record the scofflaw's tag, right as they're smashing into the side of some innocent family in a minivan or sedan.
It's one thing to punish lawbreaking with fines and points, but it won't stop the recklessness of not paying attention.
I support cameras at toll booths, in police cars and as a watchful eye to manage road conditions and look for breakdowns. But not for speed control or red light evasion. Those are a police officer's job.

I think on police cars because there are some police with bad public relation skills.Any complaints or discrepencies against the police officer or other recordable evidence can be looked at later.

On police cars to keep everybody honest. The problem with cameras all over the road is that it is an invasion of privacy. Consider all the cameras now watching you. You would be hard pressed to go anywhere without being under surveillance. If it isn't already there, license plate recognition is in place too. It took a few more years than George Orwell predicted, but, make no mistake, Big Brother is watching you.

Traffic lights are a good place to see who is running the lights. Toll booths I would assume for people who run through the booth without paying. Cameras in police cars to protect us from abuse from officers. I am sure there other places they need to be to protect us. God protect us all.
